For this first hyperessay, I will focus on media’s overall effect on the perception of race in connection with crime. I will highlight the following:
Current events such as Ferguson and the accumulating cases of police brutality displayed in the media will serve as great current events that have changed our perception of criminals. I will also refer to phenomenon that display passive injustice such as the crack versus cocaine penalty rate.
I will ask questions such as
- stereotypes that the media enforces (racial profiling)
- the everyday effect of the stereotypes on various racial groups
- the injustices of how race is tied to assumed crime levels
