We know that society is enamored by crime, but is there any way that crime could be sexy? No, not the crime of reality however, crime in the media is often sexualized. Particularly, this phenomenon can be seen when referring to female criminals. No matter how brutal the crime being displayed, it is often sexualized so that the reality of the situation is diminished. Society prefers sexy over reality when it comes to female criminals. It seems as if we need an excuse anytime a female is taken out of the victim role and put in the criminal role.
The sexualization is not secluded to a certain time in culture either. In the past we had comics and magazines that featured female criminals, only they appear very sexy over everything. An example of this can be seen above in the cover photo. In current times, examples can be seen in shows such as Orange Is the New Black. Orange is the New Black is a show following its main character, Piper, through her journey in a female prison. Though the show has great storylines, one can’t help but noticed how much nudity and over-sexualized scenes that fill the show. It all seems a bit unnecessary, but it is al in the name of entertainment.
