Proposal
In this ethnography, I plan to explore several areas of the theatre community at Emory University and how modern day theatre interacts with the variables of race, gender, and sexual preference. Being that I am very active in this community, I plan to create the ethnography from an participant-observatiion perspective.I also plan to examine theatre as a medium by asking some of the following questions: Is theatre a dead source of media? Will it die? How does it intersect with modern media and technology? I would like to also ask questions concerning whether of not race or gender blind casting is useful or does sexual preference of the actor or the character play any controversial role at all?
I will organize the ethnography in a way that will take each of these topics ( technology, race, gender, and sexual preference) and first examine them in the lager scale theatre community as a whole then narrow down to the specifics of how these issues are addressed within Emory's theatre community. This would include focusing in on specific previous productions at Emory as well as research currently being done. This will allow the combination of a broad and narrow focus to create a relevancy for the audience.
I plan to interview 4 different subjects each with a varying perspective into the theatre world. Two subjects will be students and the other two are older professionals theatre professor one of which is a playwright and the other and actress. Each subject has theatrical experience that also relates to technology, race, gender, or sexual preference alllowing them to have a variety of perspective concerning the topics.
I hope to overall give insight into the world of theatre and how it is a transforming medium that is still very much alive. Also, I want there to be a rise in awareness of the current issues that still face the theatre community.
