The police are supposed to protect the communities they watch over, however instead of providing a feeling of safety, many communities now face an intense fear that the police as cases of police brutality have increased in occurrence. A relationship of intense distrust is formed where the community who should be being protected by the police department now seek protection from the “protectors”.
Sadly, racial profiling is tied to police brutality in that communities who are majority people of color are often targeted. Simple and petty crimes, such as the incident at Fergusen with Mike Brown, become reasons for murder.
In the video to the right a man falsely accused of selling illegal cigarettes is murdered due to the brutality of the force used by the police department.
Media has had a role by spreading the word of police brutality events quicker than ever before. No matter where you look an incident of police brutality is shown around the corner.
The blast through media is spurred through a fear in the populations of people of color. They fear for their families and children wondering if their child will be the next one victimized by the police. How horrible is it that we now must seek protection from the ones who are supposed to be the “protector”.
